Let Sleeping Dogs Lie  by Lindelea 8 Review(s)

Oh dear! Yes! And I can imagine the look on Sam's face about the stool leg, enough to discourage Pippin from seeking food! Good Lord!

Going into a collapsed building...what could possibly happen. Our dear little Pippin does manage to find trouble doesn't he. I love the easy relationship between Bergil and him!

A bit from Chapter 4! (I read continuously and didn't leave a review on Chapter 4.)

‘Aha,’ Pippin said. ‘I see. This is about you playing with the pup, I think. What about your school? It won’t do to come belated.’ For Elessar had decreed, the previous week, the resumption of education for the young inhabitants of the City, a part of life returning to normal, or what passed for normal – the people still weren’t entirely sure how to live in peace instead of on the verge of war and ruin.

I know this portion was written before the pandemic but reading this right now it seems rather apropos.

So glad you have found time to start posting again.

Author Reply: Thank you so much for the smiles this morning! Much appreciated. Why are some days so much harder than others? (Rhetorical question, no need to answer.)

We know, from hard experience, of puppies' need to chew (seemingly incessantly!), especially when losing their milk teeth and growing in their adult teeth. Poor Pippin, missing breakfast entirely, and having no intention of going into the ruins. Best laid plans...

The bit you quoted from Chapter 4 does seem to fit to current events, even though this chapter was written and posted years ago. I get that same disoriented feeling when I re-read old chapters of mine about infectious fevers going around the Shire as a plot device (I am back to writing on a story set in Pippin's early years as Thain; plenty of potential for character development there). If I had been writing those in the time of Covid... I probably wouldn't have but would have had to find some other plot device. Maybe. Fevers are a time-honored tradition in the fanfic world.

I'm so glad I've found time to start reading fanfic again, and glad too that the writing is flowing. Here's hoping it keeps on. I'm so pleased to see people posting new chapters here! ((hugs)) hope this finds you and yours well.

YAY!! All fixed now!! *Wheeeeee!!!!!*

Author Reply: I know, I'm practically giddy. Blessing Rorrah and her skill and care...

Oh, dear--what is going wrong, and at such a moment? Cliffhanger!

Author Reply: Evil cliffhanger. What is going wrong, is something I took from a real-life incident, in which things might have gone badly wrong but disaster was averted at the last moment. I, however, can be more ruthless (as well as less, for that matter) than real life...

Oh no! Just when I thought I could relax...Poor Pippin and no one but Bergil knows where he is.

I love how you built the suspense and then caught me just when I let my guard down.

'Everything seemed so right in that moment. Unfortunately, that was also the moment when everything went quite wrong.'

Author Reply: I love it when things work the way I intend them to work... Doesn't always happen! ...which makes it all the nicer when it does.

Best laid plans indeed! And a first-class cliffhanger!

Whatever happens: Pippin is not alone! Bergil and the pup are there to help him. I count on them!

Author Reply: Yes! It's best to enter adventure (or misadventure for that matter) in good company!

Uh-oh! Cliffie! Dear me, Pippin should have listened to Bergil...

Author Reply: He really ought to have listened to Bergil. OTOH, neither of them could probably foresee what is about to happen.

Oh my goodness! *frets*

I wish I could rub "the soft head or furry ears" of this pup myself.

Author Reply: I miss my pup's soft head and furry ears. I held her ear curled in the palm of my hand as she slipped away, and I didn't want to let go. I can still remember the feel of it.

Our new puppy can't come soon enough, even though I know there will be a lot of bother and hassle as well. (Chewing, housebreaking, the necessity of long walks, getting *somebody* to pick up the dog waste in the yard on a regular basis, and the cost of fresh food for the creature in order to have the breeder's health guarantee...)

Cliffhangers seem to be the order of the week.

Now I'm going to worry that that building is about to come down on Pippin. That would be so bad. He couldn't take another large thing falling on him.

Author Reply: Sorry about the cliffhanger. Sometimes it just works out that way (time constraints, or high word count, or both). I will keep trying to update this story on a weekly basis, anyhow, to quickly get through the crisis to the (requisite, for my satisfaction anyhow) happy ending!
